parkrun comes to Belfast

runners gather at finish area Last Saturday saw the first parkrun in Ireland run at the Waterworks Park. The event is a free timed 5k run over a UK Athletic certified course. The footing is all traffic free tarmac footpaths contained within the park. A still Autumn morning set the mood for over 100 participants from club athletes to mothers with prams, and from pensioners to primary school children with parents. Everybody seem to enjoy the event and feedback in the post race coffee at Devines Cafe was all very positive. The event will be held every Saturday at 9.30 and should be complete by 11.00am latest which enables you to spend the rest of your Saturday on other pursuits. To compete you just log on in advance to www.parkrun.org.uk/waterworks/home.aspx and register to receive your barcode by return. This barcode then becomes your entry to any parkrun nationally for all time with no fees. The event also rewards loyalty with junior runners receiving a special t-shirt on completion of 10 runs. Seniors are similarly rewarded for 50, 100 and 250 runs receiving t-shirt, t-shirt and top and special plaque for each respective attainment.
