Stephen returned from altitute training at Font Romeu four weeks ago and followed that up a successful run in the BUPA London 10km. However, the true test of his fitness will be borne out over the next few weeks on the track.
Stephen’s debut track race takes place this Saturday with a 1500m in the Watford BMC race. Stephen always races well at the BMC meets and will be looking to go under 3 mins 45 seconds, the time he posted as last season’s opener.
Stephen’s next race will see him don the green vest of Ireland at the European Team Championships in Izmir Turkey 18-19 June, where he hopes to reap the benefits of his altitude training.
Ireland will compete against, Belgium, Croatia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Netherlands, Norway, Romania, Slovenia, Switzerland and Turkey. The team includes stars such as Derval O’Rourke, David Gillick, Ciara Mageean, Darren McBrearty and Mary Cullen.
Stephen will compete in the 5000m and will hook up with twitter pal and USA exile Ciaran O’Lionaird (Leevale AC) who will compete in the 3000m.
O’Lionaird is in exceptional form of late setting personal bests in both the 1500m and 5000m and reaching the up and coming NCAA finals in the 10,000m.
Following the event in Turkey, Stephen will return to London for some light training and 3000m on 28 June in Stretford, which will act as another sharpener before a classy 5000m in Uden on July 2nd.
Once those races are out of the way, Stephen will concentrate on the World Championship Qualifying time in either the 3000m steeplechase or 5000m.
Everyone at the club wishes Stephen the very best for the 2011 track season.
