There were plenty of Harriers in action this week, which saw a number of popular holiday road races as well as the first track and hill and dale races of the season. Among the top performances were wins by Helen Weir (Cooley Legends Half Marathon), Judi Graham (Ballyliffin Challenge Ten Miler) and sprinter Rhys Clelland, a U20 athlete who won the 300m (37.26) and was second in the 600m at the North Down Open in Bangor.
Helen Weir Wins Cooley Legends Half Marathon
Helen Weir tackled the tough, off road course in Carlingford on Saturday, clocking 1.50.59 and gutting out a nine second win over Cheryl Cardwell (Sperrin Harriers). Simon Reeve narrowly missed the podium in the men’s race, timing 1.31.52, while Martin Cox was 16th in 1.42.16.
Judi Graham Wins Ballyliffin Challenge Ten Miler
Judi Graham was the only Harrier to toe the line at the Ballyliffin Challenge Ten Miler on Saturday, but she turned back all comers to clinch the women’s title in 1.07.38.
Rhys Clelland posted an impressive early season sprint double, winning the 300m (37.26) and placing second in the 600m (1.24.31) in the first track meet of the season, the North Down Open in Bangor on Tuesday. Veteran Jim Newberry competed in the 3000m, cruising home in 10.52.90.
Conal McCambridge First Junior in Letterkenny
Conal McCambridge continued a string of good performances, finishing as the first junior at a 3k race in Letterkenny in 9:53.
Adam Boyd Second in Beragh
Adam Boyd showed good form at the Beragh, Co. Tyrone 5 Miler on Saturday, completing the course in 27.20 to finish second to perennial favourite Stephen Duncan of Omagh Harriers (26.02).
Mark McKinstry Third at Whitehead 5 Miler
The Whitehead Easter Monday 5 Miler saw Mark McKinstry claim a podium finish, taking the third slot in 26.55. He was followed home by Ed Cooke, who was sixth in 27.45. Veteran Matt Shields also cracked the top ten in 28.34, while Paul Horan was 11th in 28.43.
More solid runs came from Drew Knox (31.24), Mark Shields (33.15) and Athanasia Sevastaki (34.47).
Neil Carty First V45 at Hill and Dale
On Thursday the first race of the Hill and Dale series took place in Castlewellan Forest Park. Neil Carty just missed out on a podium position, finishing fourth overall and taking first in the V45 category in 32.40.
He was supported by Simon Reeve, who was 11th in 34.55, and Alan Ritchie in 36.31.
Harriers were out in force for the holiday weekend Parkruns, with Paul McAllister running 18.00 at the Waterworks to log his 50th Parkrun. Eight runners set personal bests, including Mark Shields in Ormeau, John McConnell at Wallace, and at the Waterworks Marc Jennings, Thomas Reid, Conor O’Rawe, Jack Carberry, Rioghnach Catney, and Sharron Sykes.
