Breege Runs Armagh Record, Eamon & Neil Also Earn Podium Places: Weekend Roundup

The spring racing season continues on road, trail and mountain with the sun shining on some great performances. Highlights include a new ladies course record and first place for Breege Connolly at the Run Armagh 10k. Also at Armagh, Eamon White ran a solid second place. Neil Carty completed the set with a 3rd place run at Thursdays Hill & Dale which also saw a strong team run. There was also some new consecutive parkrun pbs and parkrun tourism. Oh! And did anyone run the WCM 10 Mile?

North Belfast Harriers freeze Mourne Runners out of the Top 10 at Hill & Dale!

Tollymore Monument Race was the second of this year’s Hill and Dale series and The Mournes were bathed in sunshine on Thursday evening. The course offers a variety of terrain and starts with a fast downhill before it moves up through the forest to open hillside and then looping back down trails with a final steep grassy climb to the finish. The Hill & Dale ever-present Neil Carty 31:12 led home the Harriers finishing 3rd overall (1st V45). Mark McKinstry 33:11 took 6th place ahead of Simon Reeve 33:28 in 7th. Alan Ritchie then endured/enjoyed the pain of the sprint finish back up the hill finishing just a second off 18th spot in 35:23.

More Mourne Mountains

Saturday morning saw the second of this year’s nine NIMRA Championship races, the Commedagh Chase. The course starts and finishes along the Trassey track and loops up through Hare’s Gap towards Slieve Commedagh via Slievenaglogh and is roughly 13k with 650m of climb. Following  their Thursday Hill & Dale race at Tollymore, Neil Carty and Simon Reeve returned to the Mournes and both took just over the hour to complete the course. Ballynahinch Lions 10k

A sunny Saturday afternoon saw the 25th running of the Ballynahinch 10k and a new route looping through the town and the Montalto Estate. Mark Shields, Athanasia Sevastaki and Connor Mcquillan took on the undulating course. Connor was first Harrier home in 41:46 and post London Marathon Athanasia ran 44:26 just outside a podium place and Mark finished in 45:39.

Records and Podiums Run Armagh 10k

Breege Connolly set a new course record in claiming the top podium spot at Sundays Run Armagh 10k. Finishing first lady in 36:39 Breege was nearly two minutes clear of second place and finished 6th overall. The men’s course record was also broken and there was a great exhibition of isolated running from the front three – simply racing themselves over the undulating route. Eamon White took a clear second place in 33:07 ahead of the chasing pack that included Breege and Paul Elliot 7th 36:45.

Walled City Marathon 10 Mile Road Race

On Sunday, the final official preparation race ahead of the SSE Walled City Marathon took place. The Airtricity 10 mile road race started and finished in Ebrington Square and took the runners around the streets of Derry/Londonderry. Local northwest runners, racing in humid conditions, dominated the podium. After scouring the results it’s uncertain if any North Belfast Harriers ran, perhaps saving themselves for the 26.2 miles on Sunday 1st June.

Parkruns

Almost 50 Harriers ran a parkrun on Saturday morning with 4 taking a “Day Trip to Bangor”, whilst four more attained new personal bests. At Falls parkrun new pbs were set by Vincent Bradley and John O’Hare. At the Waterworks Lauren Cox was first female finisher with another personal best and Sharron Sykes smashed last week’s pb by almost 45 seconds.
