The weekend before the Belfast Marathon is often a quiet weekend with many of the club runners lining up for the full race or the relay event on offer on the bank holiday Monday. Despite this there were some notable performances from the club locally and internationally.
On Saturday the multi-distance Causeway coast event took place along arguably the most scenic course in Northern Ireland. The three distances on offer were 25k 50k and 100k. In the 25k event Simon Reeve continued to demonstrate his strength over tough courses finishing in 1st place overall. In the 50k event amazingly two Harriers made the podium. Ultra specialist Marty Rea had a great race to finish in 2nd position and was followed by Robert Irvine who continues to excel in the ultra scene with a 3rd place finish.
Big Berlin 25k
The bank holiday weekend gave an opportunity for some members of the club to try a race further a field. Eight runners plus support made their way to Berlin Germany to take part in the 25k. Matt Shields had an excellent performance to finish the 15 mile course in 1:37:00 to take 33rd place overall and 1st place position in his age category. Matt was followed by John Burns in 2:02:27, Siobhan Drain 2:05:58, Lynn McCollough 2:16:00, Steven Thompson 2:17:57, Sandy Carr 2:29:34, Jansje Le Mahieu-Lamb 3:00:48 and Kerrie Ann Thompson 3:01:41.
RTE 5 Mile
Also on Saturday the fast RTE 5 mile road race took place in Dublin. The course is known for being flat and fast and Conor Curran made the most of this to secure a new PB over the distance in a time of 26:34 and to take 4th position overall in a race which seen the top three all go sub 26 for the distance.
It was another family affair for the McCambridge clan in Donegal on Sunday in the 1200 strong 10k race held by Letterkenny AC. Conal put in a good performance and was the first from the family to cross the line in a time of 36:39 for 16th position overall. Following Conal was Patrick in a time of 44:12 and 169th positon overall. Ita McCambridge was next in a time 47:18 in 291st position and finally Orla McCambridge in 54:04 for 575th position.
The largest race of the weekend took place in Drogheda with over 1600 runners taking part in the Boyne 10k which starts in the center of town before heading into the picturesque Boyne Valley and finishes where it started. Known for being a difficult course with many climbs Laurence Johnston had a great performance as the clubs only representative finishing in 36:49 for 13th position overall and 2nd in the M50 category.
This week saw the return of the Belfast Victoria parkrun course from its temporary venue and six new Pbs for the club at a number of the events.
