Weekend Roundup – 14/15 June

There was plenty of good news for the Harriers this week with podium places in a number of events, as well as confirmation that Gladys Ganiel has been selected to run the marathon for Northern Ireland at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow next month.

Commonwealth Selection for Gladys Ganiel O’Neill

Gladys 1Athletics Northern Ireland announced a 14-strong men’s and women’s team for the Commonwealth Games on Tuesday, including North Belfast Harriers’ Gladys Ganiel to contest the marathon. Gladys’ 2.39.26 clocking at the Berlin Marathon in September 2013 was below the consideration standard of 2.40. Gladys, a 37-year-old lecturer at Trinity College Dublin’s campus in North Belfast, is the only athlete from Northern Ireland competing in the marathon.

As Gladys told the www.nirunning.co.uk website:

“I feel really privileged to be part of such a strong team going to Glasgow. The support I’ve received over the last few years from North Belfast Harriers, Athletics NI, the Sports Institute NI, and the local running community has been outstanding. I am excited about the chance to represent Northern Ireland on such a competitive stage and hope to do everyone proud.”
