Heating up at Lisburn & The Bridges

The biggest events of the week were the Lisburn 10k and half marathon. Conditions were tough with no escape from the high temperatures on the tough exposed course but this didn’t deter the 3000 plus entrants who took part in the events.

In the 10k there were two podium positions for the club in the female event. Breege Connelly continued her return to form securing 1st place in a time of 36:44 and 18th position overall. Claire Connor secured her first podium place of the week with a 3rd place finish in a time of 38:57 and 37th overall. For the men Eamon White led the way with a 6th place finish in a time of 32:54. Kent Swann was next across the line in 26th in 37:41 followed by John McConnell in 38:54 in 35th and Paul Curley who broke the 40-minute barrier for the first time in 39:49 for 49th position. Philip Donnelly ducked under 40 minutes with 39:55 for 52nd position overall. Mark McCallion was next in 40:28 for 61st followed by Gerry Gribbon in 83rd for 41:36, Eamon Sheridan in 176th 45:52, Siobhan Drain in 238th 47:50, Jason Ried in 262nd 48:29, Lynn McCullough in 284th 49:17 (PB), Mark Shields 650th in 55:57, Clare Holmes in 823rd for 59:07, Mary Reid in 907th 57:01, Nuala Connolly in 1320th 1:06:12, Gail Mallaghan in 1326th 1:05:05, Catherine Kerr in 1329th 1:06:17 and Denise Rooney 1495th in 1:11:41.

In the half marathon the tough course was made harder by the hot conditions but despite this there were some standout performances. In the female race Glady Glaniel O’Neil paced the race excellently in preparation for her Commonwealth appearance securing 1st place in a time of 1:21:36 and 13th position overall. In the men’s event Andrew Considine continued his excellent half marathon performances with a 5th place finish in 1:15:52. Andrew was followed by Marc Jennings who secured his second top 10 in the Pure running half marathon series with a time of 1:19:25 for 9th position. Enniskillen

Martin Cox made the journey home to take part in the tough Enniskillen 10k. Martin finished in 20th position overall in 39:26.

Dunshauglin 10k

On Saturday evening a large field descended on the town of Dunshaughlin in country Meath for 10k event. The course is well known for being flat and that coupled with the depth and quality of the field means personal bests are up for grabs. From the club Connor Curran was the first finisher with a 11 second personal best in 33:11 (13th), Edward Cooke was not far behind also with a new 30 second personal best of 33:26 (20th). Paul Elliott completed the group finishing in 35:08 smashing the V60 10k Irish record by nearly 1 minute and finishing in 56th position overall.

Between the Bridges

On Sunday a section of the Westlink was brought to a standstill as the between the bridge 5k took place. The Harriers were well represented and were rewarded with the top spots in both the male and female races. Philip Goss returned to action with an impressive performance to secure the top spot overall with a time of 16:16. Claire Connor took her second podium place of the week following on from her 3rd place finish in the Lisburn 10k. Claire finished the course in 18:45 to finish in 1st position in the ladies event and 15th position overall. Mark McAllister was the next Harrier to finish in 8th position in 17:55 followed by Conal McCambridge in 11th 18:04, Greg McClure in 27th 20:17, Jason Reid in 51st 21:52, Ita McCambridge in 66th 22:50, Paul Brennan in 81st 23:55, John Marquess 99th 24:58, Thomas Reid in 137th, Sharon Sykes in 149th 27:18, 26:52, Rioghnach Catney in 150th 27:18, Thomas McKinstry 342nd in 34:36 and Padraig Bingeam in 419th 37:51.

Hills and Dales

Simon Reeve was the only Harrier to take part in Thursday nights continuation of the Hills an Dale series. Simon completed the 3.5 mile, 1,800ft ascending course in 36:08.

Flagstaff to Carlingford

On Sunday Simon Reeve and Neil Carty took on the tough 11 mile mountain race between the two towns which includes an ascent of 3000ft. Neil Carty once again proved his skill over tough terrain with a 6th place finish in 1:47:54. Simon Reeve after a tough racing week and a poor route decision finished in 35th place in 2:25.

Parkrun

This week saw the 1st anniversary of Ormeau Parkrun and this brought a large numbers of Harriers across the city to the event which recorded its largest attendance to date. A prize giving also took place with Mark Shields from the club collecting the 3rd place prize in the points table.
