The racing calendar was relatively quiet over the holiday weekend but the Harriers still put in some strong performances, highlighted by Cathy McCourt’s victory in the Malahide Castle 10k Trail Race in Dublin.
Cathy McCourt Wins in Malahide
Cathy continued her recent record of good performances to come through as the first woman, and fifth overall, at the Malahide Castle 10k Trail Race on Sunday 13 July. The course was a mix of grass and forest paths.
Rathmullen 5k – Laurence Johnston First V50
Five Harriers made the trip to Co. Donegal for the Rathmullen 5k on Friday 11 July. Laurence Johnston led them home, finishing 16th overall and first in the V50 category with an outstanding time of 17.24 (just seven second shy of his personal best).
Gerry Gribben was next home in 18.50, followed by Ita McCambridge (22.21), Joanne Bush (24.36) and Orla McCambridge (26.45).
Shore 10k – Greg and Jim on the Go
Greg McClure and Jim Clinton travelled to Killough, Co. Down for the Shore 10k on Friday 11 July, with Greg finishing 21st overall and second in the V55 category in 40.58. Jim completed the course in 46.47.
North Down Open Track Meet No. 3
The Harriers were also well represented at the third North Down Open Track Meet on Tuesday 8 July, featuring strongly in the middle distance races. The 1500m was won by Adam Boyd in 4.06.72, who was competing for the first time over the distance. V35 athlete Conor Curran (9.13.57) was a close second to Annadale’s Owen Carleton (9.12.87) in the 3000m. Andrew Considine (9.15.77 for a personal best) and Ed Cooke (9.46.07) also finished strong, while Jim Newberry competed with distinction in the V60 category, clocking 11.12.17.
In the shot, V65 competitor Jim McClean achieved a toss of 10.88 with a 6 kg shot, finishing ahead of a field of younger competitors. Reece Cleland completed the 400m in 51.36, finishing third.
Breege Connolly Second at Kinnegad 5k
Breege Connolly nabbed a second place at the Kinnegad 5k in Co Westmeath on Wednesday 9 July, timing 17.13 behind the 16.48 of the in-form Barbara Clery of Donore Harriers from Dublin.
Thirty-four Harriers took part in Saturday’s Parkruns, with nine setting personal bests and three – new club member Tommy Simmons in Waterworks, John Black in Larne and John McConnell in Wallace – finishing first overall.
