laganside2

This week saw the official launch of the 2014 Pure Running Laganside 10km which takes place on Sunday 7th September, 2pm at Ormeau Park, Belfast.

Finishers of the popular race will receive a bespoke, hand-designed medal featuring scenes from the city of Belfast. Entries are capped at 1,000, and those who enter before 31st July will have their name printed on their number.

The Laganside 10km is the perfect “tune up” race for those considering running in the Belfast City and/or Waterside Half Marathons in September, and its flat course always produces a number of personal best times.

Commenting on this year’s event, race director Matt Shields of North Belfast Harriers said:

“There’s something for everyone at the Laganside 10 km – including those trying out the distance for the first time, experienced runners looking for a personal best, workplace teams, charity runners, and kids. Every year the race is great day out and a real celebration of running in the city of Belfast.”

This year the race doubles as the Northern Ireland & Ulster 10 km Championships, with individual and team titles up for grabs. As usual, the Harriers and local shop Pure Running are providing generous goody bags and category prizes in the Open and Masters categories (35+).

Apart from the athletics club competition, the race will feature the new BLT9 Corporate Cup for workplace teams.

Entry fees are a reasonable £12 for Athletics Northern Ireland affiliated runners and £14 for unaffiliated runners.

Youngsters can take part in the Rossi’s 1 Mile Children’s Fun Run for boys and girls 6-15 years old.  This event will start at 1.15 pm and is contested on a safe, marshalled and flat route within Ormeau Park.

With entrance fees at only £3 and guaranteed goody bags and medals for all children, the mile race represents great value for money. Special medals will also be presented to first and second placed children in the following categories: Under 7; Under 9; Under 11; Under 13 and Under 15.

Times for all children will be recorded but the focus of the 1 mile event is on fun and participation so mums or dads will be allowed to run alongside younger competitors if they wish.

Runners for both the 10km and 1 mile events can now enter online at www.laganside10k.com. Online entries close 31 August.

This year’s event is sponsored by Pure Running, BLT9 and Rossi’s. The official fund raising partner is the Northern Ireland Hospice. Last year the event raised around £7,500 for the Children’s Hospice.

This year the focus is on the Northern Ireland Hospice’s “buy a brick” rebuilding campaign. All sponsorship from the Laganside 10K will go directly towards the rebuild project. Runners who opt to support the Hospice will receive a fundraising pack from the charity, see: http://laganside10k.com/run-for-the-ni-hospice/.

Any queries about entries, the races, fund raising or prizes should be posted on the  official Laganside 10km Facebook page or to the North Belfast Harriers Twitter account (@nbharriers).
