The weekend saw a number of Harriers to the fore in popular, scenic races across the island. Among the highlights was a victory for junior athlete Thomas Reid in the 5k Rathlin Run, where he ran 19.00. There was also a repeat win for Breege Connolly in the Warriors Run, a 15km multi-terrain race in Co. Sligo. And in Donegal on Tuesday, son and mother duo Conal and Ita McCambridge took top honours in the Ramelton 5k.
Rathlin Run – Victory for Thomas Reid
The popular Rathlin Run, which features 10 mile and 5km races, attracted hundreds of runners to Rathlin Island to test themselves over the hilly but scenic terrain. Junior athlete Thomas Reid excelled in the shorter event, crossing the line first in 19.00 flat.
In the ten mile contest, Connor Farell was the first Harrier home in 1.15.05. He was followed by Ray Cameron (1.15.57) and Emma Sheehy (1.29.43). Sandy Carr, Thomas McKinstry and Clare Holmes finished together in 1.42.43, while Mary Reid clocked 1.44.25.
Breege Connolly Wins in Sligo
In Co. Sligo, Breege Connolly showed her autumn marathon preparations are going nicely, defending her title in the Warriors Run, a tough 15 km race featuring off and on road sections. She timed 1.02.01, five minutes ahead of the next female competitor.
McCambridges at Ramelton 5k
The McCambridge family put on an impressive show at the Rameltown 5k in Co. Donegal on Tuesday, with junior athlete Conal McCambridge winning in 16.29 and mum Ita taking first in the women’s race in 23.15. Dad Paddy was 19th overall in 21.19.
Strong Showing at Strangford 10k
At the Strangford 10k on Friday evening, the Harriers packed four runners into the top eight, led by Kent Swann’s fourth place in 37.29. Next home was Simon Reeve, whose 38.39 was good for fifth on the hilly route, then Sean McShane (6th in 39.46) and Martin Cox (8th in 40.13). Mark Shields timed 44.21 and Andrew Harding completed the course in 46.21.
At the Longford Marathon on Sunday, Greg McClure was his usual steady self, clocking 3.20.10 to finish second in the V55 division. Marty Rea was the official pacer for 3 hours, bringing his charges home in 2.58.26.
Frank Duffy Ten Miler
At the popular Frank Duffy Ten Miler in Dublin’s Phoenix Park on Saturday, Cathy McCourt won the V40 category in 1.01.34.
Darryl Blair was 30th in an always competitive field in 54.55, a good outing in his first race in several months. There were also solid performances from Thomas Simmons (58.29), Stevie Walker (1.01.29) and Jim Benson (1.02.33).
Also during the week, Martin Cox finished fourth overall and first in the V45 category at the Fivemiletown 10k, timing 39.04. Simon Reeve competed in the Northern Ireland Mountain Running championships at Bearnagh, but official results have not yet been posted.
Eight Harriers ran personal bests in the weekend’s Parkruns, including John Black and Neil Carty, who also were first finishers at Waterworks and Queen’s, respectively.
