Tough Running at Tollymore

mckinstry-ballyboley_thumb.jpgOn Saturday the 26extreme event returned to the Tullymore Forest park just outside of Newcastle. This year a large contingent of the Harriers were in action on the trail paths of the forest park in harsh conditions of the morning. In the marathon event Mark McKinstry a pre-race favourite in the event didn’t disappoint. Mark led a small group through the halfway point and the first lap of the two lap race in a time of 1:28:31. Mark broke from the group not soon after and continued to increase his gap over the rest of the pack to finish just shy of three hours in a time of 3:00:58 taking the top spot and finishing 9 minutes ahead of 2nd place. Simon Reeve also took on the 26.2 event and was part of the chasing group battling for the remaining places. Simon finished in a tight group of three runners in a time of 3:26:40 for 8th position overall.

In the half marathon event the ladies put on the tightest finish of the day and in the process tookjaniceplumb all three of the podiums spots in the race. Upfront Penny Lindsay an ever improving runner put in an excellent finish to pip trail expert Helen Weir for first place with both ladies finishing within seven seconds of one another. Just behind these two ladies and in her first run in a club vest Janice Plumb put in a great performance to take third place. The three ladies finished in 01:40:38, 01:40:45 and 01:41:27 respectively to take all three spots on the podium. In the male event Martin Cox placed well with a 6th place finish in 1:32:58. Joe Drain also performed well finishing in 9th position 1:36:52.
