Ballybeen 5k Road Race

Kent Swann led the pack at the inaugural 5k race held on a very wet and windy Tuesday evening. Kent crossed the line and set the marker for the course record in 17:35. James Wallace ran 19:16 for 7th and Paula Wallace took 19th place overall in 22:06.

NiRunning 5 Mile Trail Race

Saturday morning saw the second running of NiRunning’s Killylane Klassic 5 Mile Trail Race in Ballyboley Forest. Nearly one hundred athletes gathered at the start/finishing point at Killylane Reservoir to run the undulating loop of forest road and several Harriers were amongst the crowd. The race started as the mist rolled in over the Antrim hills and within minutes the field were disappearing up along the first climb and into the trees. One of the pre race favourites, North Belfast Harrier’s Mark McKinstry took up his predicted spot at the front but was not going to be unchallenged as a leading pack of five stuck with him and the early pace. Chasing the leading runners, North Belfast was represented by Simon Reeve, James Wallace, Helen Weir and Paula Wallace who were all running well over the gravel tracks.

With a mile to go and with the majority of the climbs now run, Mark was in a good position for the top podium spot but he had strong competition alongside him. The leading pair had by now opened up a considerable gap before entering into the final descending sections of trail. Both runners attacked the final kilometre but on this occasion Mark McKinstry was just out kicked and crossed the line in 27:31 for second place. With an impressive course record now set, the remaining Harriers were running for their own personal bests over the Ballyboley trails. Simon Reeve finished in 6th place in 30:19. James Wallace was then amongst a chasing pack of five runners determined on a top ten finish. With only seconds separating them on the final run in, James claimed 10th in 30:52 and 1st M50. Helen Weir took 4th place in the ladies race and was 30th overall in 35:38. Paula Wallace crossed the line in 50th place overall in 39:10.
