Weekly Roundup: Festival of Running

Quite a few podiums this week and some excellent junior performances in the Dalriada Festival.

Portaferry 10 Mile

On Tuesday the Portaferry 10 Mile race was held as part of the annual festival in the town. The race always attracts a good quality field and also has an associated 2 man relay event. In the main event Thomas Simmons put in an excellent performance to finish third in a time of 56:32 over the rolling course.

simmonsThomas was followed by Collin Willetts who finished in 1:03:32 for 19th and Sean McShane in 1:03:43 for 21st. Sean’s brother Patrick was next finishing just under the 70 minute mark crossing the line in 1:09:43. Racing aficionado Greg McClure was next in a time of 1:11:49 for 72nd position overall followed by Paul Williams in 199th in a time of 1:28:28.

In the relay version of the race,  a mixed pair made up of Kent Swann and Roisin Hughes each took on a 5 mile section of the course. The pair managed to complete the course in first position overall in a time of 1:01:32.

Dalriada Festival

On Friday night the small village of Glenarm also in the midst of their annual festival held a 5 & 10k event in the beautiful grounds of the Castle estate. The course which is a mix of trail and path climbs through the forest park before turning into the open estate grounds and culminates with a sprint finish into the village. In the 5k event Breege Connolly took the top spot in the ladies race with a finishing time of 18:26 to finish 10th overall.

Nat Glen finished just ahead of Breege to take 5th place overall in a time of 17:51. Matthew McIlroy, Luke Kelly and Callum McIlroy put in excellent performances to beat many of their peers to finish in the top end. Matthew was first across the line in 13th in a time of 19:38, followed by Luke in 17th in 20:13 and Callum in 21st in 20:46.

Bernadette Campbell and Carol Clarke were next to cross the finish line in a time of 22:59 and 24:42 for 31st and 39th position  respectively. Eight year old Daniel Kelly was next in an excellent time of 26:06 for 51st. Gail Malaghan followed Daniel with a time of 30:46 for 81st followed by Stephen Kelly in 99th in 32:35, Jansje Lemahieu-Lamb in 121st 35:39, Pauline Jenkins in 35:28 in 123rd , Brigid Heggarty in 141st in 41:49 and Kerry Thompson in 142nd in 41:53.

The 10k which took in two laps of the 5k course also attracted a large number of entrants. John Black and Penny Lindsay both secured 2nd place in the race. John finished in 35:45 while Penny finished 43:42 for 18th position overall.

David Clarke just missed out on a top five finish, finishing in 6th in a time of 37:49. Conor Shiels followed in 8th in 39:05. Lance Breen was next in a time of 45:50 for 25th followed by Conor Sheridan in 48:10 for 40th. Eadaoin Donaldson and Margaret Stephens rounded up the entrants from the club finishing in 1:03:07 and 1:05:29 for 108th and 111th respectively.

O’Brien Challenge

On Sunday in wet conditions the David O’Brien 26km Challenge took place in Darvagh forest. Mark McKinstry made his return froma scheduled rest period to secure a second place finish in the trail event in a time of 1:47:47. Conor Shiels made his second race appearance of the weekend with a 14th place finish in a time of 2:03:19.

Action on Hearing Loss Divis 10k

Also on Sunday the charity Action on hearing loss held their annual 10k on Divis Mountain. Brendan Grew and Sarah Jane McFadden both secured secured place in the race. Brendan completed the course in 40:08 with Sarah Jane finishing in 49:11 for 31st position overall. Paul Curley also took part in the tough race finishing in 5th place overall in a time of 42:06.

Blayney Rockets 10 Mile

On Saturday Martsje Hell made the small jump across the border to take part compete in Blayney Rockets 10 mile road race. The race which takes part around the local lakes attracted over 200 runners with Martsje securing 2nd place in the ladies race in a time of 1:04:34 for 21st position overall.

Ballater 10 Mile

Simon Reeve took part in this 10 mile race on the hilly country roads and trails along the River Dee. Simon finished the race organised by Deeside Runners in 10th place in a time of 1:03:58.
