This week Harriers excelled from the local to the world stage, highlighted by Cathy McCourt’s bronze medal over 5000 metres at the World Masters’ Track and Field Championships in Lyon, France. Cathy also finished fourth over 10,000 metres, while closer to home a men’s squad of Andrew Annett, Mark McKinstry, Conor Curran and John Black took home the team prize at the Glenmore 5k in Carlingford, Co. Louth.
World Master’s Championships
Cathy McCourt (V40 category) and Paul Elliott (V60 category) represented Ireland at the World Master’s Championships, braving tough competition and warm, humid conditions.
In the 5000 metres, Cathy clocked 19.35 to land a podium spot behind Finland’s Paula Tukiainen (18.43) and Ireland’s Maria McCarthy (18.55). She was agonizingly close to a podium place in the 10,000 metres as well, notching fourth.
Paul Elliott also impressed, as he finished sixth in both the cross country event and the 5000 metres (17.48).
A strong contingent of Harriers travelled south for the Glenmore 5k road race in Carlingford on Friday evening, getting solid runs from the first four men to claim the team prize. Just 23 seconds separated the scoring runners. Andrew Annett (7th in 15.47) and Mark McKinstry (8th in 15.49) led the way, followed closely by Conor Curran (11th in 16.02) and John Black (13th in 16.10).
