Groomsport Half Marathon and 10k
Saturday morning saw nearly three hundred runners head to the North Down village of Groomsport to take on the final race of the Northern Ireland Athletics Association Half Marathon Series and the associated 10k. The route consists of two laps for the Half Marathon with the 10k runners setting off shortly afterwards for the one lap. It was in the 10k race where North Belfast Harriers had two runners and two podiums. Adam Boyd took the win in the men’s race crossing the line in 33:49. Sarah-Jane McFadden claimed a hard ran 2nd podium spot in the women’s race in 42:52, eventually opening a gap of 13 seconds clear of 3rd.
In the Half Marathon, there were overall series positions still to be confirmed and several Harriers put in solid performances. David Clarke took 8th place in 1:20:28, again running consistently around 80 minutes for the 13.1 miles has reaped its rewards in 2015 for the current M55 Irish Masters Champion. Sean McShane finished 16th in 1:24:07 with Rory Kane in 21st, 1:25:21 not too far behind. Anne Fitzpatrick placed 3rd in the women’s race in 1:29:11 (34th overall) and has dominated this year’s Half Marathon Series. Mark Shields placed 49th in 1:35:14 and took a couple of minutes off his overall time for the Series. Likewise Athanasia Sevastaki has also completed the five races finishing in 1:38:28 at Groomsport. Both Athanasia and Carol Clarke 1:50:03 look to have done enough to secure 2nd place in their respective age categories for the 2015 Series. Also running the Groomsport Half were Kerry McShane with 2:08:46 and in her second race of the week, Gabrielle Mallaghan finished in 2:17:29.
