Weekend Roundup: Wins for McKinstry and McCourt


wilderbeastThe Harriers picked up where they left off from last weekend’s successful staging of the Laganside 10k. Although there were not as many athletes in action, they enjoyed success both near and far.

Mark McKinstry Wins Wilderbeast Ten

Mark McKinstry continued to perform at a high level, winning the inaugural Wilderbeast Ten Mile Trial Race Saturday in Glenarm. The course featured a bit of everything, including the castle grounds and leaping over some streams in Glenarm Forest. Mark clocked 58.44 and was over a minute clear of second place.

In the women’s race, Penny Lindsay also made the podium, finishing third in 1.15.28. Fifth went to Janice Plumb in 1.18.17.

Cathy McCourt Wins Lucan 5 Miler

lucanAt Lucan outside Dublin on Saturday, Cathy McCourt emerged winner of a five mile race in 31.28. Paula and James Wallace picked up age category prizes, with Paula first in the V45 category in 36.17 and James first in V50 in 29.35.

Great North Run

At the Great North Run half marathon in Newcastle on Tyne on Sunday, Joe Drain (1.37) and Siobhan Drain (1.55) both turned in strong performances.greatnorth

Lions 5 Miler

At the Lions 5 Miler in Newtownards on Friday, Joe Norney ran 29.34, good for sixth overall.

Garrison 5 Miler

The Garrison five miler event was held in Garrison Co Fermanagh  on Saturday 12th September at 12.00 noon. This was the fifth running of this annual event. Proceeds from this year’s event went to Palliative Transport Services, Fermanagh branch. This is a small voluntary organisation which provides transport for patients to receive treatment  at cancer centres, mainly in Belfast City Hospital and Altnagelvin. Conditions were poor in Fermanagh on Saturday morning but by noon rain had ceased and race was held in near perfect conditions. North Belfast Harriers sole representitive in race was Martin Cox.

Martin was second overall and won M40 in a time of 29.56.


There were plenty of Harriers taking part in the weekly Parkruns, with Ray Cameron logging his 50th and a new personal best of 19.37 at Victoria.
