There were excellent performances from Harriers of all ages this weekend, highlighted by top class runs by Matt Shields and Paul Elliott in helping the Irish team to gold medals in the V60 category of the British and Irish Master’s Cross Country in Dublin.
British and Irish Master’s Cross Country
Wet weather and mucky ground in Santry, Dublin, on Saturday didn’t dampen the performances of the Harriers who took part in the British and Irish Master’s Cross Country, with some athletes opting to compete for Ireland and others for Northern Ireland. There were teams from Ireland, Northern Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales competing over the 8km circuit.
In the V60 race, Ireland dominated proceedings, sweeping the top three positions. Brian Lynch (29.29) was followed home by the North Belfast duo of Matt Shields (29.37) and Paul Elliott (30.11) to clinch the gold.
In the V45 category, Eamon White earned individual and team silvers for Northern Ireland, posting a time of 26.48.
The other Harriers participating competed for Northern Ireland and included James Wallace (19th 29.33) and Nat Glenn (27th in 30.53) in V50; Laurence Johnston (7th in 29.28), David Clarke (13th in 29.39) and John Patience (19th in 31.11) in V55; and Jim Newberry (20th in 33.56) in V60.
