Christmas Roundup

This is the final roundup of the year as we now step into 2016 but there was still plenty of races to squeeze in the last few days of the year.

On Boxing day the annual Greencastle 5 miler took place in County Tyrone. With a strong field including Paul Pollock returning to defend his title the race was sure to be competitive. Irish International Mountain runner Andrew Annett narrowly missed out on a podium place finishing in 4th place in a time of 26:21. Tommy Hughes returned home over the festive period and took part in the action finishing in 32nd overall, 2nd V55 in a time of 29:26 followed by Laurence Johnston who secured the 3rd place in the v55 category with a 40th place finish in 29:56. Ray Cameron was next over the line in 33:54 (113th) followed by Geraldine Branagh 34:24 (137th) and Martin Cox 37:50 (282nd).

Howth Marathon

On Sunday the 27th Matt Shields took on the 26.2 mile distance in search of a qualification time for the Two Oceans Ultra in Capetown South Africa. With a storm scuttling a previous attempt, Howth became a backup run. In reality the qualification time was a mere formality to Matt, and with a finish time of 3:17 he made it way under the standard to allow him to enter the event. Matt will join all of the parkrun directors from all over the world to compete in the multi-distance event next year with Matt taking on the hardest distance of the all in the 56km (34.8 miles).

Christmas Cracker

The biggest event of the Christmas period was Newcastle ACs’ Christmas Cracker. The club had a great turnout for the event, with a bus load of happy harriers making there way to the start line. The course this year took in 1400ft of climbing over an 8.4 mile mixture of road, trail and bog and provided an excellent opportunity to burn off all the over indulgences of Christmas.

In the male under 80 category Andrew Annett, fresh from the Greencastle race partnered with Seamus Lynch from the host club to finish in 3rd place overall and 2nd in the category in a time of 51:35.

In the female 80-89 category Janice and Penny who claimed a podium place last year once against preformed with a 3rd place finish in a time of 72:07.

In the mixed 80-89 Jenifer Bill partnered with Bobby Nicholson to finish 3rd in this category to finish in a time of 70:35.

There were so many other good results but due to the sheer number of Harriers who took part and the uniqueness of these results it would take too long to list them all. All of the results can be found here: Christmas Cracker

Unfortunately we missed the results from parkrun on Christmas day, as these results were only online for a day before being replaced by the Saturday parkrun on Boxing day. There was a great turnout from the club on both days with the course record being broken by Mark McKinstry in Larne. Mark broke his own record in Larne by over 20 seconds. and was rewarded by a visit from one very famous women!
