January has got off to a cold, wet and windy start but this doesn’t put our Juniors off taking part in events.
On 3rd January Rebecca Wallace, Luke Kelly and Daniel Kelly braved the rain in Lagan Valley AC’s 5k Charity Trail at Mary Peters Track.
Sperrin Harriers’ Winter Series is halfway through with the An Creagan 5M and Drum Manor Forest 10k races taking place in January. At An Creagan on the 9th, Lauren Cox secured 1st Junior Female.
Greenmount on 16th January was the location for an icy cross country race with a free mud bath thrown in! Frozen’s Elsa would not have been out of place that day as it was bitterly cold. Putting on club vests that day were Senan Nagle, Finn Nagle, Luke Kelly, Rebecca Wallace, Eimear McBrien and Andrew Milligan. Senan finished 23rd in the Primary School boys event. Eimear finished in 22nd place in Under 13 girls with Finn taking 20th place and Luke 23rd in Under 13 boys. Rebecca took 3rd place in a hotly contested Under 15 girls race. Andrew finished strongly in 16th place, overtaking a competitor in the final few feet to the finishing line.
East Coast Running Club held their second annual Junior Cross Country Series on 10th, 23rd and 31st January. Callum McIlroy, Josh Montgomery, Daniel Kelly and Luke Kelly competed in the events with Daniel placing 2nd in his age group, with Luke 1st and Callum 2nd in their category. Well done boys!
Many of our Juniors took part in parkruns throughout the month and I’d like to give a special shout out to Callum McIlroy and Eimear McBrien for consistent running and also to Emma Uprichard who improved her time and gained a PB in Larne junior parkrun.
With the numbers steadily increasing at junior parkrun Larne and our Juniors regularly taking part in adult parkruns around the province, 2016 is looking good for another great year of athletics.
Thanks to Bob Given Photography, Paula Wallace, East Coast Running Club and Larne junior parkrun for the photographs.
