Weekend Roundup – Success on the Roads

This weekend brought more success for the Harriers on the roads, highlighted by numerous strong performances at the SEE Airtricity 10 miler in Londonderry/Derry and a victory by Mark McKinstry in the Carmen 10k.

Airtricity 10 Miler

andrewannett-greencastleIn the North West on Saturday the third running of the  Airtricity 10 mile road race was held. The course had been revised this year to remove a hilly section at the end of the race making this a perfect event to achieve an early personal best (PB) in the road running season. At the front of the race Andrew Annett held on to Gideon Kimsop (Project Africa) until the infamous Foyle Bridge at around the 3 mile mark; from then onwards Andrew had a solo run to the finish along the pristine paths of the river Foyle. Andrew comfortably secured 2nd place in a time of 53:35, a new PB, albeit his first race over this distance.

Behind Andrew, John Black had a sprint finish to secure a 3rd place finish in 54:45 (new PB). Eddie Cooke continued his comeback with a strong 5th place finish in a time of 55:56 to secure 3 in the top 5 for the club. Next across the line and just narrowly outside of the 60 minute mark David Clarke the V55 Irish Half Marathon Champion easily secured his age category with a time of 60:34 to take 16th place overall.

Martsje Hell was the first lady for the club to cross the line finishing in 4th place in the women’s race in a time of 65:56. Martsje was followed by Janice Plumb who managed to set a new PB and sneak under the 70 minute mark with a time of 69:43, enough to secure second place in the V45 category. The trio of women was completed by Carol Clarke who won the F50 age category, also setting a new PB in a time of 79:54.

Carlingford Half Marathon

On a windy day in Carlingford, a number of Harriers completed the half marathon, with Jack Carberry finishing first in the V70 category in 1.42.58. Marty Rea was 11th in 1.21.18, followed by Colin Willetts (1.26.14), Gerard McNamara (1.28.46), Colin Simpson (1.29.50), Andrew Harding (1.38.04), Ciaran Browne (1.42.58), and John O’Hare (2.08.34).

Slieve Gullion Mountain Race

The Northern Ireland Mountain Running Association (NIMRA) race series got underway Saturday at the Slieve Gullion race outside Newry. Battling cold temperatures and sleet, the Harriers’ Thomas Simmons placed ninth in 34.11.

Parkruns

As usual, the Harriers were out in force for the Saturday morning Parkruns. Joe Norney set a new personal best in finishing first at the Waterworks (17.48).
