TITANIC 10K Sunday 10th April 2016

Hill & Dale Challenge Series Race 1

Thursday 14 April saw the opening round of the 11 race series in the Hill & Dale series.  This first race was held in Castlewellan Forest Park and was attended by 268 athletes. all of whom tackled the tough 5 mile course, climbing approx. 900 ft throughout.  Mountain regular Simon Reeve finished in the top 20, getting 16th position in a time of 38.14.  John Murphy also competed, coming in in a very respectable 69th place in a time of 44.02.

Friday 15 April, Dental Solutions 5k

Pre-race favourite Mark McKinstry didn’t disappoint in this year’s running of the Dental Solutions 5k.  Hot on the heels of his Killylane classic win, Mark finished the flat and fast course in the Maiden City on the top spot out of 106 athletes in 16.06, pipping Derry City’s Martin Cox into second place by six seconds.  Conor Shiels also had a great race, finishing 16th in a time of 18.20.21.


Gortin 10k  (by Martin Cox)

The popular Gortin 10k was held on Saturday 16th April. This is a cross community event hosted by St Patricks Primary School and Gortin Primary School. The course was a typical “hills of Tyrone” undulating course. Weather conditions were changeable ranging from strong sunshine to heavy snow.

North Belfast Harriers sole representative was Martin Cox. Martin was seventh overall and won M50 with a time of 37m14s.


Patsy Kelly 5k, Dundalk, Saturday 16th April

NBH’s Tommy Simmons was the only athlete from the club to take part in this race on Saturday, running hard and getting a top 10 place, finishing in a time of 17.02 to claim sixth place.

Castleward 10k and Half Marathon Challenge

Saturday 16 April saw over 800 runners descend on Castleward estate to take part in the eighth annual 10k and half marathon races there hosted by events company Born2Run.  Two athletes from the club took part in the gruelling and undulating 10k course, with John McConnell achieving top 10 finish, coming in in seventh position in a time of 42.18.  Padraigin Bingeam finished in 416th in a time of 1.37.08.

Cooley Legends half Marathon and 10k

Also on Saturday 16 April, three brave souls from NBH ventured down to take part in the annual Cooley Legend’s tough half marathon races, known for not being too easy. The half marathon started off at Lumper’s Pub and had two long uphill sections.  The course, which is 60% off road, takes in the best views of what the Cooley’s has to offer.  Those runners who made it to Goylin Pass overlooking Carlingford Lough were rewarded with breath-taking views.  The race finishes in the village of Carlingford, a short walk from The Foy Centre and some well deserved refreshment.  Sandy Carr and John Burns took part in the half marathon, finishing in 2.16.35 and 2.00.48 respectively  Lynn McCullough excelled in the 10k race, finishing second in her age category!


Run Armagh Sunday 17 April 2016 

Louise Smith put in a fantastic performance to retain her title of ladies’ winner in the eighth running of the Armagh 10k on Sunday.  Over 400 athletes too part in this, the third race in the Novosco 10k Grand Prix, which was run on a mainly rural, undulating route.  Louise stormed home in a time of 38.12, well over two minutes clear of second place.   Other athletes taking part were: Simon Reeve, 12th overall in 36.49; Jason Reid, 55th in 47.58; Elaine Holmes 143 in 49.32 (new PB); Phil McIlwrath, 143 in 51.19 (new PB); Rosy Ryan 404 in 1.13.48.
