Weekly Report 22nd May 2016 – grass roots to Olympic standard

It’s been a big week for the club culminating with the announcement today (23rd May) that Breege Connolly will compete for Ireland in this summer’s Rio Olympic Marathon. Gladys Ganiel O’Neill has also been named as reserve on the ladies team.

And from International Olympic standard right to grass roots, plenty of Harriers were out running and racing over the last seven days.


Ballybeen 5k

Tuesday evening saw the first event of the week with a 5k around the roads of Ballybeen. In her first race of the week, Paula Wallace ran 22:11.


Annaghmore 10k (&5k)

On Wednesday evening, Greg McClure placed just outside the top ten at the Annaghmore 10k finishing 11th with 43:23

Foyle Valley AC Wilkie’s 5 mile

Thursdays flat five mile race saw Vernon Shiels run well under 30 minutes for 12th place with 29:02 and a new PB.

Hill & Dale (Race 6) Loughshannagh

Thursday evenings Hill and Dale series continued down in the Mournes with the open mountain race of the 5 mile Loughshannagh Horseshoe, Neil Carty ran 45:47 for 7th place.


Runher Coastal Challenge 10k

Pure Running hosted their annual Coastal 10k and 5k races on Friday evening. Racing along the North Down coastal path with the finish line at Crawfordsburn Country Park Paula Wallace placed 21st in 44:16


Albertville 4 Mile

On Friday evening a number of Harriers took part in the inaugural 4 Mile road race in Duncrue Industrial Estate with the promise of a PB and a post run burger at the Portside Inn. The Harriers had three of the top five finishers but were also well represented throughout the field. Paul Horan 2nd, Brendan Grew 3rd and Louise Smith 3rd claimed podium places.

Jengana 10km

The 4th annual running of the Jengana 10k was held on Saturday on the roads and trails of the Shanes Castle Estate just outside Antrim. Two Harriers both ran under 50 minutes for the undulating course. Gerry Gribbon placed 22nd in 43:43 and Jason Reid finished in 49:00 in 44th.


Leiden Half Marathon Holland

Gladys Ganiel O’Neill raced to an impressive victory at the Leiden Half Marathon finishing seven minutes clear of second place to break the tape in 1:18:27.

Belfast One World Run 10k

The 30th running of the One World Run 10k (& 5k) took place in Ormeau Park on Sunday afternoon. Several Harriers participated in the charity event with Simon Reeve taking 2nd place in the 10k in 37:19 and Mark Shields with 41:10 just outside the top ten in 11th. In the associated 5k races Conor O’Rawe and Ciara O’Rawe topped their respective podiums.
