McKinstry, Men’s Team Claim NI & Ulster Half Marathon Titles: Weekend Report

mark&andrewThe Northern Ireland and Ulster Half Marathon Championships were contested on Friday evening at the Ards Half Marathon. The men enjoyed great success, sweeping to the team victory as Mark McKinstry (1.10.21) and Andrew Annett (1.11.03) claimed the first and second positions. Mark secured a personal best on the hilly, challenging route.

The other team members for the gold winners were John Black (8th in 1.16.19) and Marc Jennings (10th in  1.17.05).

Louise Smith also secured a medal, finishing third in the women’s race in 1.24.32.

The Harriers very nearly earned a second team medal as another men’s team finished fourth. They were led by Laurence Johnston (21st in 1.21.06), Martin Cox (24th in 1.22.48), John Miskimmin (27th in 1.23.42), and Simon Reeve (28th in 1.23.47).

There were solid performances from the two other NBH women in race: Ita McCambridge (1.35.52) and Helen Weir (1.37.55).

Next home for the club were John McConnell (1.24.23), Vernon Shiels (1.25.42), Gareth Grew (1.29.22), Brendan Grew (1.29.51), Colin Simpson (1.30.51), Paddy McCambridge (1.34.30), Robert Irvine (1.37.55), Paul Williamson (1.44.21), Gerard McNamara (1.44.22), Daniel Kelly (1.48.18), Patrick McShane (1.59.22), Marty Caldwell (2.14.47), Jason Reid (2.14.48), and John Johnston (2.37.57).

Divis Challenge 10 Miler

The Harriers staged the second of two summer races in the Belfast Hills on Saturday, the Divis Ten Mile Challenge. It followed on from last month’s Cave Hill Challenge.

John Nicholson of PACE Running Club came away with the victory in 1.03.37, not far ahead of the Harriers’ own veteran Neil Carty, who clocked 1.03.57 for second. The women’s winner was Helen Perry of Belfast Running Club in 1.20.08.

Simon Reeve was the next to complete the circuit for the Harriers in 1.12.18, good for fifth. He was followed by Michael Lawlor (1.28.18) and Samuel Carr (1.38.26).

McKillop Impresses in 1500

Irish Paralympic star Michael McKillop, who recently joined the Harriers, made progress on his road to Rio, running 4.04.47 in the heats of 1500 metres at the Irish Senior Track and Field Championships. He knocked more than seven seconds off his season-opening time.

The Northern Ireland & Ulster Vets Track and Field championships were held Saturday at the Mary Peters Track, with Paul Elliott securing yet another V60 gold, clocking 17.47 for 5000m. He was fourth overall in the race, among all age categories.

Jim McClean collected silver in the weight throw and bronze in the javelin.

Paul Horan also ran the 1500m in 4.38.

Jim Newberry Wins Fields of Life 5k

Jim Newberry, a V60 athlete, enjoyed success in winning the Fields of Life 5k in the Stormont Estate outright in 21:14.

neil cartyCarty Successful in Hill and Dale

Neil Carty continued to prove himself on the mountains, finishing second overall and first in the V45 category in the final event in the 11-race Hill and Dale Series in Drinahilly on Friday. He clocked 23.21 on the route, finishing behind Zak Hanna of Newcastle.

Neil also captured first in the V45 overall series rankings, and sixth overall. All the athletes ahead of him in the overall rankings were open athletes (under 35), except for one V35 competitor.

Personal Best for Conal McCambridge

Conal McCambridge competed in the Peninsula Triathlon in Ballyholme as part of a relay team from Pure Running, clocking a personal best of 15.07 in the 5k run part of the event.

Parkruns

Plenty of Harriers turned out for the Saturday Parkruns, with Brendan McCambridge and Catroina Morris recording new personal bests at the Waterworks.
