weekly round up 3 July – Success keeps coming

Spelga Skyline Mountain Race

Saturday 2 July saw just over 60 participants in the sixth race of the NIMRA series, with the winner of this tough 20k course picking up the Denis Rankin Memorial trophy.  NBH’s Simon Reeve was the sole participant for the club, and finished in 15th position overall with a time of 3.10.45.   The hard-working athletes were rewarded with the stunning views of the Mournes, although at times battling through very poor conditions.   The race itself involved 1,400 metres of ascent, definitely not one for the faint-hearted.

Jude Gallagher Round the Bridges 10 Mile

There was a double success in the annual Round the Bridges 10 Mile road race, held on Thursday 30 June, at times in torrential rain, with one heaving downpour 25 minutes into the race.   Mark McKinstry continued his winning streak, taking top spot in a phenomenal 53.05 and a new 10 mile PB.   In the ladies’ race, Gladys Ganiel finished in first place (12th overall), with a time of 58.48.  Other club members taking part were: Vernon Shiels, 22nd in 1.02.11; Conor Shiels, 28th in 1.03.54, and Greg McClure, 77th in 1.09.15.

Close to 500 participants took part in the second running of the Comber 10k race, hosted by Ballydrain Harriers, this new fast and flat course now included in the ongoing Novosco Grand Prix.  Lindsay Gordon put in a superb performance to secure second spot on the podium, finishing in a time of 33.01, just 40 seconds behind winner Ben Branagh.  There was a great turnout from the club:- Tommy Simmons, 9th in 34.24; Kent Swann, 11th in 34.54; James Wallace, 14th in 35.46; Davy Clarke, 21st in 36.42; Laurence Johnston, 24th in 36.57; John Patience, 44th in 39.25; Ray Cameron, 64th in 40.59; Jim Newberry, 100th in 43.20; Carol Clarke, 148th in 46.21; Phil McIlwrath, 276 in 53.23; Rosy Ryan, 481st in 1.24.08.
