Saturday 12th November saw the 29th British & Irish Masters Cross Country Championships hosted by Scottish Masters in Tollcross Park, Glasgow. On a challenging course and in perfect running conditions the first race saw the ladies and M65 men competing over 6km. Paula Wallace (NI) ran strongly for 25:45 and 17th place in the V45 category.

In race 2 for the M50 through to M64 men there was an excellent performance from Paul Elliott representing Ireland in the M60 category. Paul worked his way through the field ending up in silver medal position. In the M55 category, David Clarke (NI) also had a fine run to finish in 6th place in 27:14 with Laurence Johnston (NI), possibly not recovered from the injury he sustained at Ballyclare last week finishing in 20th place in 31:01. The M50 category saw another fine run from Neil Carty also representing Northern Ireland in 6th position in 26:12.

The final Championship race of the day saw the M35 through to M49 men. Eamon White (NI) ran strongly to finish 7th in the M45 category in 25:18, closely followed by Paul Horan (NI) who took 21st place in the M40 category with a time of 26:49.

Also on Saturday 12th November, the Tollymore Trail Marathon took place, offering runners a choice of an ultra marathon (3 laps, 40 miles), a marathon (2 laps) or a half marathon (1 lap). Each lap had two long tough climbs to test the strength and endurance of the competitors. There was also a 10k event that encompassed part of the course used for the longer events.

The route followed a series of picturesque forest trails, all within the confines of Tollymore Forest Park. Weather conditions were favourable and there were some fine performances by club athletes including Thomas McKinstry who completed the ultra in a time of 8:11:37 for 60th place. In the half marathon, Martsje Hell finished well up the field in 39th place in a time of 1:43:02, closely followed by Christopher Day in 1:51:50 for 107th position.
