Despite the onset of the colder weather NBH athletes were out in force at a number of events this week. The popular Run in the Dark race was first up at a wet and windy Stormont Estate on Wednesday 16th. On Saturday 19th, along with the usual parkrun events, options included the next round of the Athletics NI XC League at the MUSA (the Mighty Oaks XC), the annual Run 4 Rescue event in Newcastle and also Born 2 Run’s Drum Manor 10k and 5k races. The final race of the weekend was the NI Duathlon 5k run in Victoria Park in support of sight loss cycling on Sunday afternoon.
Run in the Dark
The annual Run in the Dark races saw 3,000 runners at the Stormont Estate joining thousands of other runners across Ireland and the UK and further afield to run in support of the Mark Pollock trust whose mission is the search for a cure for spinal cord injuries. A total of 20 NBH athletes took part in the 10km event with a further 8 running the 5km. In wet and windy conditions there were some excellent performances including top 10 finishes for Simon Reeve who completed the 10k in 38:27 and Stephen Walker who finished the 5k in 18:29.

The second race of the ‘run forest run’ challenge promoted by Born2Run attracted several hundred athletes to Drum Manor Forest in the heart of the Sperrin Mountains on Saturday. Representing the club Pádraigín Bingeam finished in 352nd place in 1:24:48 in the 10k event.
Acorns AC ‘Mighty Oaks’ XC
The latest round of the Athletics NI XC League 2016/17 took place at the Mid Ulster Sports Arena outside Cookstown on Saturday. Weather conditions had improved after the earlier cancellation of the MUSA parkrun because of ice and frost. As the races progressed the course began to cut up with good sections of the course turning from green grass to brown mud and adding to the challenge of the various climbs, most notably the ‘Acorns Hill’. Two harriers, Ray Cameron and Greg McClure made the trip for what was a really well organised event and worked hard to complete the 4 lap / 4 mile course before adjourning for hot soup and various other goodies laid on by the organising club.
Full results were:
57 Ray Cameron M40 29:01
84 Greg McClure M60 31:15
