NI & Ulster Senior Cross-Country Championships, Lurgan Park
Saturday afternoon saw the finale of the local cross-country season with the 6k women’s and 12k men’s races in Lurgan Park. Despite the deluge of rain that had fallen in the previous twenty-four hours, the ground conditions weren’t as bad as previous years and the sun even made an appearance. Twenty Harriers travelled down the M1 to compete both individually and as club teams.
The ladies race was won in 22:48 and North Down AC took all three podium places to also secure the team prize. Louise Smith finished in 9th place to lead home the Harriers team who placed 6th in the highly competitive team competition.
The men’s event provided the spectators with a great race at the front end of the field where six, then four were vying for the three podium places. The finish tape was broken 39:08 by City of Derry AC (who also claimed the overall team competition). However, NBH weren’t far behind and Mark McKinstry added to his collection of silver at this event by claiming 2nd in 39:13. John Black, 40:43 also had his own race within a race to place inside the top ten, taking 8th. With Philip Goss, Lindsay Gordon, Neil Carty and Conor Curran all finishing within the top 25, North Belfast Harriers also secured silver in the team competition.
Such was the strength in depth shown by the club, NBH also placed 5th overall in the team standings with Shane Donnelly, Andrew Considine, Andrew Miligan, Edward Cooke, Vernon Shiels and Marc Jennings .
NBH also collected full participation points in the Cross-Country League by having 16 athletes cross the finish line.
