Track, Field, Road and Mountain Success for Club Athletes

NBH athletes achieved notable performances this week in a variety of competitions and there were the usual large turnouts at parkrun events north and south of the border.

North Down AC Track & Field Open Meeting Round 2 (Tue 16 May)

The second open T&F meeting took place on Tuesday evening at Bangor Sportsplex. John Black and Conal McCambridge made the trip down the A2 to compete in the 3000m and 1500m races with John achieving a fine win and Conal just off the podium in 4th place. Full results were:

Foyle Valley AC Wilkie’s 5 Miles (Thu 18 May)

The Foyle Valley annual 5 mile classic took place on Thursday 18th May. The race is in memory of their late colleague Colm Wilkinson. The course is fast and flat along the cycle path by the River Foyle at Brandywell. Mark McKinstry represented the harriers and had a fine run to finish in 25:15 to take runner’s up spot behind Hillary Chirchir from Project Africa Athletics who ran a new course record time of 24:26. Chris McGuinness (Foyle Valley) took 3rd place in 26:26.

Lough Neagh Rescue Charity 5 Miles (Sat 20 May)

The inaugural 5 mile road race in support of the Lough Neagh Rescue took place on Saturday at the Antrim Loughshore. A total of 123 runners completed the course with Dan Tanui the overall winner in 28:55. John Miskimmin represented the club, finishing in a fine 7th place in a speedy 29:55.

Slieve Donard Mountain Race – Hill & Dale Series, Race 6 (Sat 20 May)

On Saturday 20th May Newcastle AC welcomed nearly three hundred athletes to the ‘Slieve Donard Classic’ mountain race. The course is 5.5 miles from the main street in Newcastle to the top of Slieve Donard at 850m above sea level. Competitors chose their own way to the summit and back, with some opting for the Black Stairs and others, the more runnable Glen River path. The race was won by Zak Hanna (Newcastle AC) in a time of 59:24 with Andrew Annett finishing in an excellent 3rd position in 61:32. Marc Jennings ran strongly to also finish well up the field in 32nd place. Full results were:

Athletics NI Jumps & Throws Fest (Sun 21 May)

On Sunday 21st May strong man Jim McClean took first place in the men’s shot put, sending the 5kg shot 11.36m.
