Gladys Rocks to AAI Half Marathon Title
Gladys Ganiel repeated her success of 2007 to claim the AAI national title in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Dublin half marathon on Sunday morning. Elsewhere in a busy week of racing, club athletes competed in the mountains, on rural roads and round city centre streets.

Rock ‘n’ Roll Dublin Half Marathon
Gladys Ganiel claimed the AAI national title in Dublin in Sunday’s Rock ‘n’ Roll half marathon. On a challenging route the evergreen Gladys repeated her success of 2007, finishing in 1:17:07, almost 2 minutes clear of 2nd place Catriona Jennings. A total of 18 club athletes made the journey south to take part in the event with some fine times being recorded. Full club results were:

Rock ‘n’ Roll Dublin 5k
On Saturday the first of the Rock ‘n’ Roll series of races offered a 5k challenge which was taken up by 3 club athletes using it as a warm up for more strenuous efforts to come in the half marathon the following day. The results were:

Ligoneil Community Festival 5m
On Wednesday evening, Coleen Thompson and Sam Carr finished first lady and first male respectively in the Ligoneil festival 5m race. No results were available but also spotted in pre-race photos were Jackie and Mick Lawlor and Gary Blythe.

Nissan Classic 5m Road Race, Coleraine
The annual Nissan classic 5m race took place on Wednesday evening. Mark McKinstry led home the 351 strong field, ably supported by Stephen Walker and Ray Cameron. Full results were:

Mallusk Harriers 5m Road Race
The popular and challenging Mallusk Harriers 5m race took place on Friday 11th with a strong showing by 27 club athletes. Marc Jennings had a great run to take 3rd place in 28:49. Sarah-Jane McFadden also ran well to finish as 3rd lady and evergreen Jack Carberry took 1st place in the V70 category. Full results were:

Groomsport Half Marathon
In the latest race in the Pure Running/Champion Chip half marathon series new member Joe Malone recorded a fine win over the testing 2 lap course. John McConnell also finished strongly to take 6th place in 1h26m. Full results:

Lurig Mountain Race
The Lurig mountain race saw 366 athletes take on the challenging route from the centre of Cushendall village, navigating country trails and the grassy slopes of the open mountain. At times ascending on hands and knees and descending sliding on backsides the event was thoroughly enjoyed by all the club’s participants. Strong man Tommy Simmons took 2nd place behind mountain specialist Johnny Steede of Glen’s runners. Complete results were:

NIMRA Seven Sevens
The annual seven sevens race over the seven highest peaks in the Mournes sees competitors run a total distance in excess of 19 miles with a total ascent of over 2,500m. The first of the seven summits is Slieve Donard and the runners subsequently ascend Commedagh, Bernagh, Meelmore, Meelbeg, Binnian and Lamagan. A total of 112 athletes completed the challenge with our own Simon Reeve representing the club and finishing in a fine 21st place. Simon timed his effort well, making up time on his rivals over the last 2 climbs over Binnian and Lamagan.

GymCo Feile 10k
On Sunday morning the GymCo Feile 10k race took place with runners starting at Yorkgate, running through the Belfast city centre before heading up the Falls Road and eventually finishing at Malone College in Finaghy Road North. A fine, bright morning greeted the competitors with an excellent performance by Brendan Grew to claim 2nd place overall. Stephen Walker completed his second race of the week to finish in 6th place.
