NBH REPORT 4th-10th SEPTEMBER 2017

NBH REPORT 4-10 SEPTEMBER 2017

QUIET WEEK: Larne 10Km, Great North Run, Torbay Tornado, Thames Path Challenge and parkrun
After a very busy time last week when many of our runners were volunteering or running the Laganside 10k, this week was much quieter. 6 runners participated in the East Coast AC Larne 10km, 3 travelled to Newcastle, England to complete the Great North Run, 1 travelled south to Devon, 1 to the River Thames and countless ran in many different parkruns across the north. Without doubt the next few weeks’ report will abound with half marathons, full marathons and relay times …. but for now it was all quiet on the Northern Front.

East Coast AC Larne 10km (Saturday 9th September 2017)
One of the big events of the weekend was the 2nd East Coast AC Larne 10km.The fast two lap course was run within Larne Town Centre, starting and finishing at Centre Point, Pound Street, Larne. At 11am runners made their way down the Main Street towards the picturesque promenade area with stunning views along the sea front. After exiting the promenade, the route veered inland back towards the Town Centre. As was the case last year, 2016, North Belfast Harriers took 1st place. John Black won the race easily in 33:12 this year taking the crown from last year’s victor, Mark McKinstry. Joe Malone followed John Black home in 35:18 ensuring that NBH had the top 2 podium positions. April Clarke and Carol Clarke continued to impress with the 10km distance. April was first NBH lady home in 46th position. Congratulations to all who took part.

The Great North Run, Newcastle (Sunday 10th September 2017)
Among the many, many thousands of runners who took to the streets of Newcastle to run in this popular half marathon were our own Andrew Annett and Natt Glenn. On this cold, September morning Mo Farrah led the way home for the 4th time. Andrew Annett finished 28th overall in 1:09:21 and Natt Glenn finished in 1:20:46 (third V50 overall.) Elaine Holmes was our only female athlete running; she completed the distance in 1:50:56. Well done to Andrew, Natt and Elaine!

Torbay Tornado Half Trail Marathon

Helen Weir participated in this event on Sunday 10th September. The half marathon route was challenging and included roads, pavements, hills, steps, and coastal path sections with tree roots, rocky and muddy terrain and 11281 feet of climbing. She completed this course in the official time of 2:00:00. Managing to stay dry as the forecasted storm did not materialise during the race, Helen finished in 7th place overall and was 2nd lady home.

Thames Path 100km Challenge

John Miskimmin took part in his first Ultra over the weekend. This Thames Path 100km Challenge started at Putney Bridge, then upstream to leafy Kew, on to Richmond and through the locks at Teddington, making its way past Hampton Court Palace and on to Runnymede of Magna Carta fame at 50km, then  onwards past Windsor Castle finishing at Henley. Joe not only completed the ultra comfortably within his own 10 hour target but he took 3rd podium position when he crossed the finish line in 09:21:26. What a massive achievement!
