NBH Race Report 16-22 October 2017

Mucky in the Country, Wet and Windy in the Mountains
The main events this weekend were the trials for the home international cross country championships in November and the prestige Mourne skyline trail race which attracted a quality field including many international competitors.
Garmin Mourne Skyline Mountain-Trail Race (Sat 21st October)
The runners covered a total distance of 35km with an elevation gain of 3370m, contending with a mix of technical and mucky terrain, strong winds, and rain. Testament to the difficulty of the challenge was the fact that only 153 finished of the 194 starters; some dropped out, others were unable to stay inside the  strict cut-off times at the 10 intermediate checkpoints en route. The race finished with a dramatic descent from the summit of Slieve Donard.
Four harriers completed the course in fine style with Simon Reeve 17th in the male race in 5h13mins and Jennifer Bill 14th lady in 7h27mins. Nichola  and Geoff Swann finished together in 8h01min with Nichola 15th lady finisher in the process. Well done all, hopefully the legs are recovering well.

NIMAA Cross Country Trials (Sat 21st October)
At Queen’s playing fields at upper malone (the DUB) the weather was somewhat kinder than in the Mournes for a strong contingent of NBH athletes competing for international team selection in the various masters categories. The first race saw the ladies and M65+ men competing over 3 laps (approx 6k). With conditions underfoot heavy the race was a good test of strength and fitness. Congratulations to Penny Lindsay and Jim Newberry who were subsequently selected to the NI team. The full results for NBH competitors in the ladies and M65 categories were:

Ireland Cross Country Trials (Sun 22nd October)
Nat Glenn made the trip to Blanchardstown to compete in the Irish trials and was rewarded with 5th place in the V50 category and subsequent selection to the Ireland team. Nat covered the 7km course in 27:47, later describing the standard of competition as ‘unreal’. Nat can look forward to competing against club-mate Neil Carty at Gransha Park on 18th November !

Centra Pairs Run (Sun 22nd October)
The latest Centra run in aid of Action Cancer attracted a number of club athletes who enjoyed a quick tour of Ormeau Park on Sunday morning. Participants ran in pairs in a relaxed, fun atmosphere with no times or positions being recorded for the event. The route used the well marked 5km parkrun course and the experienced marshals ensured no-one took any wrong turns (accidentally or deliberately).
