NBH RACE REPORT w/e Sunday 19h November 2017

Run in the Dark 5km and 10km
(Wednesday 15th November 2017)
The iconic Belfast Run in the Dark took the runners through the floodlit Stormont Estate. On Wednesday evening thousands of runners in Belfast, across Ireland and the UK and other international venues. They ran under the night sky in support of finding a cure for paralysis by fast tracking a spinal cord injury cure. Belfast’s Run in the Dark is of huge importance to Mark and the Mark Pollock Trust. Many of our club runners took part in this event and thoroughly enjoyed this unique running experience. Results are available at www.nirunning.co.uk and athleticsni.org.



British and Irish XC International Gransha Park, Derry

Saturday 18th November 2017
The eyes of the British & Irish Masters running associations and their many followers were on Derry this weekend. Gransha Park grounds played host to the 30th annual running of the British & Irish Masters Cross Country International which first took place in Wrexham in 1988. Close to 500 of the best masters runners, from Vet35’s to Vet75’s, represented Northern Ireland, Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales in the three International age group races and the supporting Open Masters race. The action started with the women lining up alongside the Vet65, Vet70 and Vet75 Men for their 6k race. This race was won by Claire McCarthy representing Ireland in 22.36. Penny Lindsay and Jim Newberry also competed in this event. In the same race, City of Derry AC’s Hannah Shields took 2nd place in the F50 category, crossing the line in 25:03. Hannah’s performance guided her team, which included NBH runner, Penny Lindsay to 2nd place in the team standings. It was then the turn of the Vet50, Vet55 and Vet60 athletes, who raced over 8k. Ben Reynolds, English athlete led the way home in 28.28. Neil Carty (M50) had a fantastic run finishing in 7th position in 29.07. Neil Carty was part of the M50 team which gained a bronze medal for 3rd team place. David Clarke won a silver medal as a member of the M55 team. Matt Shiels was part of the Irish team which won Gold Medal in the M60 category. Many congratulations who helped bring home the medals. The final International race was the Vet35, Vet40 and Vet45’s also competed over 8k.

Saturday 18th November 2017
Anthony Fleming and John Beggs were among the 540 runners who participated in Drum Manor Forest Park, near Cookstown on Saturday in the 5km or 10km races. Drum Manor Forest lies immediately south of the Sperrin Mountains and west of Lough Neagh. The race route, predominantly on forest trails, weaves its way through the estate. Anthony and John enjoyed the trip to Drum Manor with its shrubs, butterfly and Japanese garden, arboretum, ponds and mixed woodlands. The 10km Race was won by Gavin McCaffrey from (MMJ) from BAAC in 36:20. The 5km race was won by Jared Martin (MO) in 19:55..

County Down Championship 5k Road Race

Sunday 19th November 2017

This inaugural race was not an official Athletics NI Championship fixture. Nonetheless this fast, flat course was perfect for securing good times and attracted the very best, elite athletes. Laura Graham continued in her winning ways winning in 16:27.  Our own Mark McKinstry battled with Foyle Valley’s Keith Shiels to take 2nd place in 14:31. John McGuigan followed behind in 11th place with a finishing time of 16:55.

parkrun results

Roy Kane ran a PB of 18:57 Ormeau parkrun and Matthew Lavery ran a PB in exactly the same time,18:57, in Valley parkrun. David Curran (19:00), Max Reid (19:45), David Johnston (25:52) and Thomas Norton (26:49) all celebrated PBs on Saturday morning in Waterworks parkrun.. Well done!
