The Harriers Excel at the London Marathon

The week after Easter saw the athletes from North Belfast Harriers tackle races in Whitehead and Armagh, and Sunday saw a large contingent of runners and supporters take to the streets of London for the marathon.

Whitehead 5-mile Road Race (Mon 22nd April 2019)

The traditional Easter Monday race in Whitehead attracted several harriers to contest the tough 3-lap course. Conditions were sunny though a little breezy as the 280 strong field set off just after midday. Mark McKinstry was first to show and by the end of lap 1 he had built up a useful lead over John Black in 2nd place, with Kent Swann and Davey Clarke having a ding-dong battle for 4th and 5th places. Not far behind, Vernon Shiels, Nat Glenn and Luke Kelly were all vying for a top ten position.

Meanwhile, April Clarke was holding 2nd place in the ladies race, a position she held on to till the end. Mark McKinstry held on for the victory in a speedy 25:41 with John Black taking 2nd just 1 minute behind. With Vernon Shiels taking 7th place and winning the M40 category, and strong running from the other NBH athletes it proved a great race for the club.

London Marathon (Sun 28th April 2019)

Conditions in London were pretty good for long distance running as 14 club athletes took on the challenge of the famous London Marathon on Sunday. The atmosphere in the English capital, the support from family and friends around the course and the vast crowds inspired everyone taking part as they raced the 26.2 miles, many also raising money for charity.

In a race which saw an incredible 42,438 finishers, the club’s fastest finisher was Lawrence O’Hara who was mixing it with the elites from the start and came home with a new PB of 2:31:20. Many congratulations also to Paul Hutchinson who set a new PB by over 2 minutes, finishing in 3:00:10, to Thomas Norton who took over an hour off his PB in 4:36:23 and to Michelle McLoughlin who completed her first ever marathon in 4:31:51.
