Mark McKinstry and Gladys Ganiel take the spoils at Fairhill 5 mile Road Race (Wed 05 June)
NBH athletes dominated this popular Ballymena race with the first 3 men and first lady all running in the famous harrier’s vest. The men’s team prize was ensured and a number of the places in the veteran categories were also filled by harriers.
First home was Mark McKinstry, winning this race for the 3rd year in a row, with Conor Curran and Gareth Lyons taking 2nd and 3rd places to make up the podium. Gladys Ganiel claimed 14th position overall to win the ladies race, getting the better of a good battle with Ciara Toner of Springwell. With James Wallace claiming 2nd M55, Laurence Johnston 1st M60 and Brian Stewart 1st M65 it was also a good night for some of the club’s veteran athletes.

Craigavon Lakes 10k (Wed 05 June)
Evergreen Louise Smith took first place in the ladies race and was well supported by James Trainor as both finished in the top 15, well inside the coveted 40-minute barrier. The race consists of 2 laps of the lake at the Craigavon watersports complex and this year attracted 223 runners. Louise came home in a fine 38:58 with James not far behind in 39:02.
EAMS 6-hour Challenge Part 1 (Fri 07 June)
On a lovely evening for running, this event attracted many of the endurance junkies preparing for the Energia 24-hour race later this month. The race started at 6pm and involved runners completing loops from the Loughshore at Jordanstown down to Gideon’s Green and back. Club members Greg McClure and Gordon Glenn took part, with Greg completing 37.8 miles and Gordon 30 miles.


NI & Ulster Senior Track & Field Championships (Sat 08 June)
There were a number of fine performances at the Mary Peters track on Saturday. Conan McCaughey finished 6th in a competitive 1500m in a time of 4:06.46. In the women’s 100m, Caitlin Maguire claimed the bronze medal in a time of 12.46s. Darragh Andrews was eliminated in the heats of the 100m but went on to record 3.2m to take 9th place in the women’s long jump.
In the men’s 5000m, Conan McCaughey again featured, taking 4th place in 15:12.31, with John Black claiming 6th in 15:16.98.
Enniskillen 10k (Sat 08 June)
Over 600 runners took part in this popular race on Saturday afternoon, and there were fine runs by the harriers who made the trip. Gareth Lyons, in his second race of the week claimed 5th spot and 1st in the M40-44 category with David Clarke and Simon Reeve also finishing in the top ten, each taking 2nd place in their respective categories. Carol Clarke continued her fine run of form to claim 2nd place in her category to match the achievement of husband David.

Mourne Way Ultra/Marathon/Half marathon/10km (Sat 08 June)
Also on Saturday, the Mournes was the picturesque setting for the latest event in the 26-extreme series of races. Conditions were mucky and wet which added to the challenge of the difficult running terrain. Two NBH athletes took part with Sandy Carr completing the marathon in 5hr30mins and Helen Weir taking 3rd place in the half marathon in 1hr57mins.
