Participation growing as club goes from strength to strength – a club for all!
Between Monday and Thursday of last week, club coaches and volunteers gave of their own time on at least 42 occasions to deliver 24 pre-planned running sessions to over 580 attendees.
256 of the attendees were non-members from the community who took part in the two twice-weekly Couch to 5k programs being run by the club and the remaining 324 were members attending coached sessions.
In addition to active running and classes, the club also delivered an informational talk (organised by Helen Weir, April Clarke and Seamus McCann,) to 49 female members on the experiences of Gladys Ganiel O’Neill, a club member, who has competed at both Commonwealth and European level in the Marathon. Gladys spoke about her background growing up in Harrington, Maine, USA, college basketball and cross-country, being trained by Ray Treacy (brother of 1984 Olympic Silver medalist, John Treacy,) balancing scholarships, PhD studies and lecturing with family life. Gladys’ talk was both inspiring and humble and very much appreciated by NBH ladies.

Further to the coach-led sessions, the clubhouse was also available to members for the remainder of the week to arrange their own group runs and there were at least 30 members who made use of the facilities in this way last week (this was a quiet week in that respect, probably due to race commitments.)
The club also provided a wide variety of other activities/classes for its members including Boxercise, Circuits, Yoga and Strength & Conditioning with approx. 60 attendees at these classes last week.
In total, the club premises and facilities provided by the club have been used on over 700 separate occasions in the past week.

NI & Ulster Intermediate & Masters XC (25 January)
The harriers travelled to Gosford on Saturday afternoon to take part in the NI & Ulster XC. Great success at this event where Mark McKinstry claimed first in the Vet Men’s race (Men’s team 3rd overall and a M40 team prize) and the ladies’ vets took top spot in the teams. Congratulations to all who ran for the “Stags” – who also literally made an appearance!

AXA Raheny 5 Miler (26 January)
The 36th AXA Raheny 5 Mile Road Race, one of the most eagerly awaited events on the athletics calendar, took place on Sunday afternoon at 3pm.
While the race has its fair sprinkling of serious athletes, what has made the AXA Raheny 5 Mile so popular over the years is that it caters for runners, joggers and walkers of all abilities. Congratulations to April Clarke, Carol Clarke and Rory Kane who all achieved PBs.
