Athletics NI 2019/20 Cross Country League Champions Crowned in Coleraine

After the final round of the Cross Country League at the NI & Ulster Senior Cross Country on Saturday 22nd February at the Ulster University, Coleraine, the league tables are as follows:

In an extremely competitive Women’s League, North Down AC have taken the top spot with a win in Coleraine, to finish on a total of 194 points from 7 rounds out of 9. They have just taken the spot from 2nd place, Armagh AC who finish with a total of 190 points. In 3rd place is North Belfast Harriers with a total of 166 points, only 1 point ahead of 4th place, Ballydrain Harriers, with 165 points.

In the Men’s League, North Belfast Harriers secured 1st place with 194 points, beating Willowfield Harriers, who finished in 2nd place with a total of 171 points. After a tough battle for 3rd place, Armagh AC just secured the spot with 154 points, only 1 point ahead of tied teams, Beechmount Harriers and North Down AC who both finished in 4th place with 153 points each.

NI & Ulster Senior Cross Country, Coleraine

The conditions were tough but the potential reward was well worth turning up for as both Men’s and Women’s teams showed up in numbers on Saturday afternoon to race the Ulster Senior and final event of the Athletics NI league at Coleraine. Mark McKinstry claimed an individual bronze and lead the Men’s team to 3rd place on the podium. The Women’s team placed 5th overall for the NI & Ulster XC and with that secured enough league points to claim 3rd over the 2019/20 season. It was also confirmed that the Men’s team would retain their league title.

Saturday morning’s weather was the worst so far this winter with a cold wind blowing sleet, rain and hail over most parkruns. The were however, plenty of hardy Harriers out parkrunning including Matthew Carleton who completed his milestone 50th parkrun at Waterworks.
