North Belfast Harriers Junior Run Report: 17 – 24 April 2022

run3

Don’t say it too loudly but the weather this week resembled something we would expect to see over a pleasant Summer so fingers crossed we have more of this to look forward in the weeks and months ahead, it certainly makes getting out for those training sessions all the more pleasant!

We had no training this week due to the Easter break although it was still a busy week for many of our Juniors with the Firmus Athletics Meet at the Mary Peters Track on Thursday evening combined with parkruns over the weekend

Firmus Fab 5 Meets

The first of the Firmus Fab 5 athletics meets hosted by Lagan Valley AC at the Mary Peters Track took place on Thursday in what were near perfect conditions for an April evening.

We had 19 of our juniors competing which was great to see considering it was during the Easter break with many people away. Our Juniors competed in various events including 60m, 100m, 600m and 800m races as well as Javelin, Shot Putt and Long Jump field events.

The biggest well done has to go to young Ethan Wiltshire who claimed a podium position in the 60m sprint bagging himself a well-deserved bronze medal! This event was extremely competitive with 21 runners competing over 3 races with Ethan getting a time of 10:02, only 0:47sec off first place!

Other notable highlights among many on the night involved two of our U13 girls;

  • Despite running with a stitch from the 400m point, Cassie Curran claimed 4th place in the U13 girls 800m that had 24 girl running split into two races, a great effort against much older girls!
  • We had 8 of our U13 juniors participate in the 100m sprint, 4 boys and 4 girls. Our fastest finisher on the night was Isla Wiltshire with a time of 15:12 with our next fastest finisher boy coming in at 15:45, well done to Isla and Team Girls in claiming the crown of the fastest sprinter for our U13’s on the night!!

Athletics Northern Ireland Junior Endurance Squad

Following their successful qualification form the Northern Ireland Flahavan’s Primary School Cross Country championship final in March, three of our juniors were selected to take part in the Athletics NI Flahavans Endurance Squad 2022-23. Their first session with the Athletics NI coaches took place on Sunday morning at the Mary Peters Track and these will take place monthly until March 2023.

We wish Cassie Curran, Isla Wiltshire and Cormac Leheny the best of luck representing the club as part of the endurance squad for the year ahead.

Upcoming races for Juniors

The next Firmus Fab 5 Meet takes place on the 12th May followed by three more on 2 June, 18 August and 1st September. Feedback on the night and afterwards from those who took part this week was really positive so it would be great to see even more of our young stags take to the Mary Peters Track at the next event.

Each event has various track distance races and some field events so a great opportunity for our juniors to gain some fantastic experience.
