Comber CROPPED

Maine Running Hall of Fame 21st Induction Ceremony

The board of directors of the MRHOF named nine individuals who have made significant contributions to the sport of running in the state of Maine, USA. These nine individuals were recognized at the Maine Running Hall of Fame at its 21st induction ceremony held on Sunday, Nov. 13, 2022 at the Governor’s Hill Mansion, Augusta, Maine.

One of those was our own Gladys Ganiel, of whom the MRHOF wrote:

Gladys Ganiel O’Neill – Started running in 8th grade at Harrington Elementary School. She was the top female high school runner for Narraguagus High School, also in Harrington, Maine. Gladys held three State Class C titles in 3200 meters and 2 State Class C titles at 1600 meters. She set five cross-country records. Gladys went on to run for Providence College achieving the title of East Coast Athletic Conference Champion twice. She moved to Ireland and began training for marathons. Gladys ran a personal record at the Dublin Marathon and served as Ireland’s alternate for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Very well done Gladys.

Sun 20th Nov 2022: Irish Senior Cross Country Championships

Sunday in Downings saw the Irish Senior Cross Country Championships take place on the Rossapena golf course in very changeable conditions. The men’s team was weakened somewhat by injury and other commitments but still managed a creditable 7th place led home by Finn McNally in 7th position and Andrew Milligan in 9th. The other team members on the day in finishing order were Finton Campbell, John Black, Brendan McCambridge, Conal McCambridge (who flew in from Washington DC on the morning of the race) and Cathaoir Purvis. Unfortunately, we had no ladies representation at the event this year.

Roise Roberts and Matthew Lavery. Both have progressed to be leading contenders in their age groups (U20) and our now competing for national vests. On Sunday, Roise gained automatic qualification to represent Ireland in the Euro Cross Country by finishing an excellent 3rd place in the Women’s Junior race. Matthew also had a great race in a top class field finishing 10th in the men’s U20 category. Well done to both.
