Mastering XC – Weekend Report

mckinstrybronzeThere was plenty of off-road success for the Harriers this weekend, with Mark McKinstry earning a bronze medal at the Irish intermediate cross country championships in Dundalk, and Callum McIlroy winning the junior boys race in the East Coast AC Junior race series at Curran Park in Larne.

The Harriers also supported the Run 4 Wellbeing on Sunday at the Waterworks, which was organised to raise awareness of services for mental health issues.

Irish Veterans and Intermediate Cross Country – Bronze for Mark McKinstry

The Irish Veterans and Intermediate Cross Country championships were held on Sunday in Dundalk, with the highlight of the day for the Harriers proving to be Mark McKinstry’s late charge to nab a bronze medal in the Intermediate race. Mark made up considerable distance to claim the third spot, covering the mucky 8km course in 27.22.

John Black (30.09) and Mark Jennings (30.20) finished 24th and 28th, respectively.

In the 7km Veterans race, the Harriers put together a team to compete in the V35 division. Although two of those athletes were actually in older age categories, the squad claimed fourth – an agonising two points outside the bronze medals. More than 400 athletes competed in the race.

First home was Eamon White, tenth overall in 24.40 and second in the V45 division. He was followed by Alan O’Hara (30th in 25.33) and Neil Carty (35th in 25.42 and fifth in the V45 division). Tommy Simmons rounded out the scoring, taking 53rd in 26.13. David Clarke timed 27.32, irishxcintermediate2016good for fifth in the V55 category.

East Coast AC Junior XC

Race 2 in the East Coast AC Junior XC series was held at Curran Park in Larne, with the Harriers’ Callum McIlroy finishing 16 seconds clear of the field in the junior boys’ contest.

Sperrin Harriers Winter League

There was more off-road action in race 4 of the Sperrin Harriers Winter League 10k at Drum Manor, with Kent Swann finishing a credible fifth in 36.19. He was supported by Simon Reeve (38.27), Martin Cox (38.50), Colin Simpson (43.09) and Eadaoin Donaldson (1.03.11).

Run 4 Wellbeing

run4wellbeingMore than 150 people and eight organisations took part in the Run 4 Wellbeing, a 5km run and 2.5km walk organised to raise awareness of mental health issues, including local organisations like Lighthouse, FASA and PIPS. The Harriers provided organisational support for the event.

Joe Donnelly of Tamhi (Tackling Awareness of Mental Health Issues) was motivated to organise the event after some suicides in the area. He told the Irish News (25 January): ‘It’s a great way to highlight all the services. This brings loads of people together and gets people talking about the groups.’

The event was also supported by Belfast City Council and Sport NI.

Harriers also took part in the Saturday Parkruns, with Paul Curley finishing first in the Waterworks in 18.05.
